Google Rewarding Mobile-Friendly Websites

Mobile-Friendly Websites rewarded

In case you’ve been living under a rock – or, you know, busy running your business – in February Google announced they are changing their algorithm to reward mobile-friendly websites as of April 21. It’s not that they “ding” you for not having a mobile site, but those that have a mobile-friendly website will be rewarded.

What does this mean?

It means that your content needs to be optimized for smart phones and other mobile devices.

How do you know if your site is optimized?

Its pretty easy actually. Use Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test page. It will tell you if the page passes or not.

You can also check out their Get Started page that has links to a slew of information and several guides to help you understand how all the pieces fit together.

Next Steps

Google isn’t removing you from the search results but it will give priority to those sites that are mobile-friendly. So your next steps will depend on how much you need to do to make the site mobile-friendly and whether it makes more sense to adjust the current site or start over to update the site not only for mobile-readiness but take advantage of other updates as well.
